This is a rare guitar with a finish is next to perfect, there are no cracks, chips, dings, pings or dents! If you look hard enough across the finish with light you may see some spyder hair type scratches just from handling the guitar thats why I would say 99% perfect. Even a new one might show these fine marks.
It´s model 336/12 with a string converter. It changed from twelve to six strings (or any number i between). When engaged, the converter comb pulls down a chosen number of strings. When not engaged, the guitar is a "normal" twelve string by default. The string coverter was designed by James E Gross of Glenview, Illinois. These convertible comb models disappeared from the company´s product line in 1976.
This is a 12 String Fireglo Finish Rickenbacker Guitar, collectors item. Serial Number GB884
This guitar is FINE! Rare almost perfect condition. It has a Fireglo finish, 1967. Non original hard case included.
Most guitarists find six strings more than enough to cope with but some brave players favor instruments with extra strings usually added to the 3 existing strings to form pairs or "courses". The intention is to expanded the range of the standard guitar bolstering the sound with the additional higher pitched strings and most effective for rhythm playing.
Sometimes for solo work single strings are added to the normal size. An early pioneer of this scheme was jazz guitarist George Van Eps whose 1960's Gretsfh was based on his 1940's seven-string Epi Deluxe.
Ironicallylusing fewer strings than normal can provide new sounds, and probably the best-known exponent of this technique is Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones' guitarist often uses a five-string instrument, usually a six-string with the low E removed for his powerful rhythm parts. David Bowie took the idea to its minimal conclusion on his 1990 tour by "playing" a one-string guitar.
